How to catch the Sergeant Major
The Sergeant Major is out at any hour and in any weather, so it can bite on any cast.
It's a level 1 catch (easy) with the Steady fighting style: strike when the marker is on green; misses strain the line.
Roughly 1 in 52 fish that spawn in the pond is a Sergeant Major. Worms make fish bite sooner, and rarer fish go for them, so bring some for the hard ones.
Every catch also rolls a random name with a prefix and a suffix, and a rarity tier from Common up to Super Duper Mega Rare, so no two catches are quite the same.
